TOSS THE NON-STICK
Many of you know already that Teflon type non-stick cookware is toxic. It is created using a chemical called PFOA which is so toxic and bioaccumulative (it takes 10 years to get out of the body if there is no new exposures) that it is one of the few chemicals to actually get phased out! “Animal studies strongly suggest that when enough PFOA builds up in the body, it can cause cancer, liver damage, growth defects, immune-system damage, and death.” Trying to get pregnant? These chemicals may make it harder for you!
Don’t get too excited though ..it’s not gone yet ..by 2014. It is not just about not scratching it and rubbing off the surface into your food (although that is a big part), it is also about fumes that are created when it is heated. These fumes will kill your bird if it is in the kitchen when you heat these pans to high heat.
Avoid them and stick with stainless steel, cast iron, enamel, and GLASS for cooking!
*Oh and yes that does mean your griddler, sandwich maker, George Foreman Grill…all of it! Sorry!
