I will admit that I do love candles. I love the way they smell and the feelings that they give me with different kinds of scents. Especially around the holidays I love the smells of cinnamon and apple and spice and all of that! But sadly, this has caused me some sadness, as I had to quit using candles when I learned all the toxic crud that they release into the air. My Yankee Doodles or whatever they are called were filling my home with toxic chemicals while they were filling my home with yummy smells. I didn’t know that nearly all candles on the market are made with:

Paraffin: this is a petroleum-based product that is typically bleached using dioxins (the most toxic chemical on Earth by the way, and emits toluene, benzene and other chemicals which are highly toxic carcinogens and have been linked to birth defects and other health conditions. These chemicals get into your fat cells and stay in your body for years, if not a lifetime.

Lead: Lead was banned from candles in 2003 after 30 years of asking the industry to “self regulate” the no lead policy with no luck. There is concern that candles made overseas may still be contaminated however. Some are still made with heavy metals such as tin or zinc, which still coats your house and exposes you to unnecessary heavy metals.

Fragrances: Unless it is scented with essential oils, you are getting yet another toxic wallop when you light up. Most are scented with chemicals known as phthalates, which are linked to birth defects in boys when exposed in the womb, cancer and more.

Even the dyes can contain toxic chemicals. And when you light the wick and then melt the paraffin, you release this lead, toulene, benzene, and other chemicals; Traditional candles used often and in unventilated areas can cause lung cancer, asthma and other condition…yikes! I mean what constitutes a “well-ventilated area?” It’s not like I had it lit next to an open window!

So do you have to give up candles altogether! Not anymore! I have found THE candle company!! After digging through the “green candle” companies I found that the safety of these was confusing. So soy wax burns cleaner….great! But it is likely GMO since over 90% of soy is GMO…not so good. I don’t know what GMOs would do to my air, probably nothing, but I don’t want to support the planting of GMO crops for sure. So then there is beeswax. That seems pretty benign. But then I found that companies using these “safer” waxes were still adding phthalates or other chemicals to the candle! What? Why would they do this? Well, it is cheaper for one thing. But it really eliminated the purpose of splurging on that “green’ candle doesn’t it!? And the really safe ones I DID find had no scent at all. This may be ok for some people but this wasn’t for me.

So soy isn’t enough, beeswax isn’t enough, so what is the answer? AN ORGANIC CANDLE! !! Yes!! There is now an organic candle! And it is made by a company called no other than….THE ORGANIC CANDLE!
